GHANA LEADS WEST AFRICA WITH NEARLY ZERO-ENERGY BUILDING (nZEB)

The Energy Commission of Ghana has officially launched West Africa’s first nearly-zero-energy building (NZEB) at its head office in Accra! This beautifully designed, sustainable facility showcases Ghana's commitment to renewable energy and climate action.

Constructed over eight months and funded by the German Government for €1 million, the building is a game-changer for the region. It self-generates 88% of its energy needs using solar power and plans to export surplus energy to the national grid once net metering is fully in place.

Built with locally sourced materials, the NZEB demonstrates the viability of eco-friendly construction, with only air conditioners and lighting imported. It symbolizes Ghana's vision for net-zero emissions by 2070 and sets a high standard for future building projects across the nation.

The facility will serve as an Energy Academy, inspiring and training the next generation of energy experts.

The Minister of State at the Energy Ministry, Herbert Krapa, in remarks delivered by the Sanitation Minister, Hon. Lydia Seyram Alhassan, highlighted the building as a milestone in Ghana’s renewable energy journey, a model for energy efficiency and a vital step towards responsible environmental stewardship.

With support from GIZ and contributions from architects, engineers, and workers, the NZEB represents what can be achieved through foresight and partnership.

The German Ambassador to Ghana, H.E Daniel Krull, in a speech read on his behalf by Franziska Jebens, expressed confidence that this building will inspire sustainable practices within the Ghanaian building sector and beyond.

In his address at the ceremony, The Executive Secretary of the Energy Commission, Ing. Oscar Amonoo-Neizer, stated that this nearly-zero-energy building stands as a beacon of sustainable development and a testament to Ghana's role as a leader in the renewable energy transition in West Africa.

Mr Tangmor Marmor, Cluster Co-ordinator, GIZ, said the facility had to inspire more change in the Ghanaian building sector.
"We are not only making...Energy Commission is stronger, but also we want to strengthen the entire energy sector and the building sector.
