Inspection and Testing of Electrical Wiring of Public/Commercial Facilities

The Ghana Electrical Wiring Regulations 2011, L.I. 2008 was passed into law by Parliament on Friday 24th February, 2012.

The purpose of the Regulations are to guide professionals who engage in electrical wiring and installation works and ensure the enforcement of minimum standards of electrical wiring on facilities and also ensure safety of persons, livestock and other property from hazards that arise from the distribution and use of electrical energy.

Regulation 11 Subsection 3(a) of the Electrical Wiring Regulation 2011, L.I. 2008 states that;

“Periodic inspection and testing shall be carried out ten years after the initial installation and use”

Pursuant to the above, all public and commercial facility owners are required to;

1. ENGAGE A CERTIFIED ELECTRICAL WIRING INSPECTOR (CEWI) TO INSPECT AND TEST THE ELECTRICAL WIRING OF ANY FACILITY THEY OWN THAT IS TEN (10) YEARS OLD AND ABOVE.

2. CARRY OUT ALL RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE CEWI REQUIRED TO ENSURE THAT THE FACILITY IS SAFE.

FACILITY OWNERS SHOULD TEST THE ELECTRICAL WIRING OF THEIR FACILITIES BY THE END OF 2016 AND OBTAIN AN ENERGY COMMISSION INSPECTION AND TESTING CERTIFICATE FROM THE CEWI.

(Public /Commercial facilities are buildings that are open to the general public and/or are used for commercial activities such as filling stations, banks hotels, churches, office buildings, shopping malls, markets, schools, restaurants, sports facilities, stores, hospitals etc.)
