Background Electrical Wiring

The Ghana Electrical Wiring Regulations 2011, (L.I. 2008) were passed into law by Parliament on Friday 24th February, 2012 as one of the responses to the spate of electrical fires that had occurred in the country. The key objectives of the Regulations are to ensure that only properly qualified and certified professionals engage in electrical wiring and installation works, to well defined standards that would promote the safety of persons, property and livestock. Under these regulations, only Certified Electrical Wiring Professionals (CEWPs), qualified under the regulations, will be legally entitled to undertake indoor electrical wiring projects.

Examination Details

  • Domestic

    Examination Fee GHC450
    Area Applicable includes homes, apartments, estates, bungalows, flats, cottages, kiosks etc

  • Commercial

    Examination Fee GHC580
    hotels, churches, markets, filling stations, hospitals, schools, banks, shopping malls, etc

  • Industrial

    Examination Fee GHC720
    facilities used for industrial purposes, factories and all facilities in domestic and Commercial category

  • Inspector

    Examination Fee GHC780
    Inspection and testing of new installations,additions to existing installations and alterations done on existing internal electrical wiring installations.

  • CEWP-I

    Examination Fee GHC470
    Certified Electrical wiring professional- Inspectors(CEWPI) Inspection and testing of new facilities for service connection. For Already existing CEWPs

Certification Process

There are 2 classes of certification:

1. Certified Electrical Wiring Professional (CEWP)

  • Domestic Electrical Installation
  • Commercial Electrical Installation
  • Industrial Electrical Installation

2. Certified Electrical Wiring Inspector (CEWI)

After successfully passing through the stages of certification, candidates are issued with

  • A Certificate
  • An Identity Card
  • A Stamp

The Energy Commission engaged the Technical Education Unit (TEU) of the Ghana Education Service to produce a curriculum for the examination and certification of electricians. The curriculum for the examination is complete and is available for purchase at GHC 50.00 at the Energy Commission’s Office.

The Examination will be conducted in English schools accredited by the energy commission run pre –examination training programs syllabus is available at the energy commission at gh¢50 only. candidates should come along with examination materials (pens,pencils,calculator, etc) written examination will include electrical wiring drawings (diagrams). no mobile phones are allowed during the examination. candidates are also advised to purchase and read l.i.2008 (available at assembly press)
